What's the *cause* of alpha wave sleep disorder?

One obvious possibility is that noises during the night (such as cars driving by) may momentarily wake you. ME/CFS patients generally have a much greater sensitivity to sounds (ie, even during the day, ordinary sounds can be very disturbing and overstimulating to the mind if you have ME/CFS), so I imagine this greater sensitivity to sounds may make ME/CFS patients more easily aroused and thus momentarily awoken from sleep when there are noises during the night.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). This study revealed CFS EEG microvolt levels were significantly higher in the 5 to 7-Hz range in both conditions and were significantly lower in the 9 to 11-Hz range. This display of excess theta is assumed to reflect the cognitive difficulties associated with CFS. The increased microvolt levels found in the lower frequencies in CFS subjects may be indicative of deficits in information processing speed, psychomotor activity, attention, retrieval of information from semantic memory, and logical reasoning, and the metabolism of the cerebral cortex found in earlier studies between CFS patients and other disorders
Alpha-delta sleep in patients with a chief complaint of chronic fatigue.

Alpha-delta sleep was not significantly correlated with fibromyalgia, CFS, major depression, or primary sleep disorders, but was significantly more common among patients who had chronic fatigue without major depression. We conclude that primary sleep disorders are relatively common among patients with chronic fatigue and must be diligently sought and treated. Alpha-delta sleep is not a marker of fibromyalgia or CFS, but may contribute to the illness of nondepressed patients with these conditions.
